Nationally Acclaimed Artists Perform at Nease
On November 3, 2011, Nease High School hosted Climbing Poetree - a duo of performance artists who traveled from New York to deliver a tour-de-force performance entitled the “Hurricane Season.” Through compelling poetry, imagery and artistry, these two multi-talented young women focused on environmental and social injustice and on how underdeveloped nations and low-income populations are most affected by and carry a disproportionate burden of environmental impact. Their performance channeled hope into vision, shattered assumptions that bind the status quo, and inspired to make a better future visible, immediate, and irresistible.
Climbing PoeTree is the expression of a growing movement for radical social change. Poets, performers, print-makers, dancers, muralists, and designers, Alixa and Naima have sharpened their art as a tool for popular education, community organizing, and personal transformation. With roots in Haiti and Colombia, Alixa and Naima in five self-organized independent tours have catalyzed over 500 crowds in more than 70 cities from Oakland to Atlanta, Johannesburg to Havana and have led more than 100 arts-based political education, anti-racism, and entrepreneurial workshops in institutions from Cornell University to Rikers Island.
The performance was sponsored by the Nease IB Booster Club.
Nease High School College Night

On October 13, 2011, Allen D. Nease High School and the Nease IB (International Baccalaureate) Booster Club hosted its 6th Annual Nease College Night, which began with informative college information presentation by Patrick Herring, Director of Admissions University of Florida, and culminated with the largest Nease college fair to date attended by representatives from over 60 colleges and universities around the country.
The college fair held in the Nease gymnasium provided a great opportunity for area high school students to meet with representatives from over 60 universities and colleges and obtain information and handouts. The fair exhibited a wide range of colleges and universities, including both in-state and out-of-state as well as public and private schools varying greatly in selectivity, size and price. The great diversity and number of schools participating in this fair attracted a huge turnout of students and their families from Nease and other St. Johns County high schools.
Nease High School Welcomes 78 Juniors to Its International Baccalaureate Program
On Thursday October 6, 2011, the 78 newly accepted junior class members of the Allen D. Nease International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program were officially welcomed and pinned by the senior class members of the program. During the ceremony, the students and their guests enjoyed the opportunity to hear guest speaker Melissa Vecchiola, a Nease IB graduate, discuss the many ways in which the IB program benefited her as a graduate of the Florida Southern College and beyond. After the ceremony, students and their families enjoyed a reception sponsored by the IB Booster Club.
In its 16th year at Nease High School, the IB Program is a rigorous, two-year internationally-based program of curriculum and service that meets the needs of highly motivated secondary students, providing a comprehensive and integrated approach to learning. Students prepare for this program through Nease’s Pre-IB Program for freshmen and sophomores. The primary objective of the IB Program is to provide a world-class education that prepares students with the intellectual, social, and critical perspectives necessary for college and the rest of their lives.
The Washington Post Ranks Nease 79th in Nation
Allen D. Nease High School was ranked 79th out of nearly 2,000 of the nation’s public high schools in The Washington Post's 2011 High School Challenge. The 2011 High School Challenge Index is a ranking system developed to recognize high schools which make an overall commitment to prepare their students for college. (Note that previous years’ national rankings of the Challenge Index were published in Newsweek magazine.) The 2011 Challenge Index is a simple calculation determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) tests that a school gave in 2010 by the number of its graduating seniors. Public schools were ranked only if they achieved a ratio of at least 1, meaning that there was at least one test given per graduating senior. The schools ranked represent only 7% of the nation’s approximately 27,000 public high schools.
The Challenge Index list also gives a sense of how successful the students are on these tests by including the Equity and Excellence rate, the percentage of all seniors who have had at least one score on an AP, IB or AICE test that would qualify them for college credit. In addition, a general indicator of the school’s poverty level is given by listing the percentage of a school’s students whose family income qualifies them for federally subsidized lunches. Nease’s 2011 Challenge Index was calculated to be 4.769, meaning that there were almost 5 college level tests given for each of Nease’s 2010 seniors, and almost 60% of these seniors scored high enough to qualify them for college credit. Congratulations to Nease students, faculty and administration for this outstanding accomplishment!
